Waties Island Nest Count

Sunday, September 1, 2019

Sunday, September 1st

The morning started with a threatening sky, but those clouds moved out, no rain, but when we left the island greeted with a rainbow.

Nest #19 Emerged, Day 54 - this nest has been plagued by Ghost Crabs, we have lost about 9 eggs to these pesky crabs.  This nest was laid right at the base of the jetty on Tuesday, July 9th . When checked this morning there were not our normal indicators for an emergence, a depression nor an emergence hole, but we had plenty of tracks.  This nest was over-washed from the high King Tide last night, so that may of been a wake up call to the hatchlings, to move out of the nest.  An inventory will be scheduled, news on this event will be forthcoming.

Nest #22 at Marker  #9 was also over-washed.  A Ghost Crab trap will be placed by Nest #21R (below Marker 6)  by Monday's Walkers, presence of Ghost Crabs noted today.

We now have 6 nests, hoping the best for them before Waties Island feels the presence of Dorian.

Nest #19 Emerged, lots of tracks, but no emergence hole or depression,  hoping the hatchlings took advantage of the high tide to make their way to the ocean
