Waties Island Nest Count

Thursday, August 2nd

Just as we started our journey out to the island the rain hit.  As it goes these days not for long but we got a little wet opening the gates and when we first arrived but then it stopped and the sun at least tried!

Bill, John and Sheri went to the lower end. They reported that nest #14 had two ghost crab holes and a ghost crab trap was inserted (the last one).  Nest #7 also had one of the back poles missing.

Kinsey, Elaine, Mel, Troy family and Flossie walked the upper end. As we approached nest #13 Melodee found a dead hatchling.  It was down by the water and had been semi-eaten.
Nest #13 had many shells in front of and around it.  We approximated 6 shells so 7 dead hatchlings were logged in.

Nest #2 also had prominent holes.  Approximately 2 eggs lost.
Nest #4 lost 2 eggs also.

Some visitors to the island that we don't see every day... a live blue crab

and a dead land turtle.  We thought it might be a snapper.
We left the island as we came ... in the rain!

A great shot of Sheri and John...
