Waties Island Nest Count

Tuesday, June 7th

The morning of our 4th nest! Our students, Rachel and Grace, were back with us so they walked the long end with Sherrie.  Bill and I had not walked very far on the short end when the phone call came in...a nest right by MM#4.

Our turtle walked up the beach hit a "bush", went around and up to the very top of the dune and stopped.  She laid a beautiful tidy pit at the very top of the dune.  Our team said she laid her eggs on the top of a pedestal.

Rachel and Bill probed and found the nest almost immediately.  It was too perfect to not be easy. However the climb up was not easy!

The crawl measures 33" and her nest was 9' deep. Because of the sheer drop-off in the back of the dune the triangulation was done to the front of the DNR sign.  The sign and poles were marked appropriately.

The volunteers walked the research egg down to the ocean and the vial was marked.

It was a wonderful, fruitful morning.
