Monday, September 5th - Happy Labor Day

Happy Labor Day to all - have a joyous and safe day with friends and family.

Another beautiful sunrise

We are on the downhill slope of the 2022 Sea Turtle nesting season.  All of our remaining nests have been caged with the exception of the last nest we have.  At this time, we have seven nests left to hatch/emerge, and three Possible Nests "PN's".  If we see no action on our PN's the DNR signed poles will be removed, and it becomes a False Crawl.

If you are interested, here's the South Carolina Sea Turtle nesting count by species.

Species                 Nests
Loggerhead          7,885
Green Turtle              19
Kemp's Ridley             1 - laid in North Myrtle Beach
Unknown                     4
   Total Nests         7,909

The only action we had on Waties today was we found a hatchling in a Ghost Crab hole that was under the cage of nest #13.  I was not going to leave him to be devoured by the Ghost Crab, so we took him to the water.  He looked a little dehydrated and was weak, so we left him close to the receding tide and were going to check on him when we walked back.

Sure enough, we could see him moving his flippers in the sand on our return trip, so I picked him up again and waded into the ocean hoping he caught the outgoing tide and he must of needed the rest in the wet sand, because he took off like a shot.  Safe travels little one.

Nest 13 = just a few hatchling tracks

A few more tracks

We found this little one in Ghost Crab hole

He looked a little dehydrated here, hoping the wet sand helps

Good Luck little one

Got a little wet on the way back down the beach
