9-12-22 Nest 19 Emergence

It was a muggy morning with high humidity. While Janice and Sandy checked on the nest on the lower end of the beach, Leslie, Erin and JoAnn started on the upper end. PN7 still looked slightly washed over but it looked like Nest #23 was clear of high tides.

Leslie decided to remove the wooden red posts and replace the DNR signs and secondary poles to remark the nest. While she did that, Erin and JoAnn continued to walk the island.

It wasn't long before they got to Nest #19 and saw that it had emerged over night. There were hatchling tracks along with ghost crab tracks, deer tracks, canine tracks and racoon tracks.

Unfortunately, there was a dead hatchling found on the beach near the nest that looked like it had been there for quite a while.

The rest of the walk was very calm with nothing new to report. On the way back to the shed the volunteers saw trees full of Egrets due to the tide getting high. Overall, it was a great morning on beautiful Waties Island!
