Waties Island Nest Count

Thursday, June 11

Well today was a challenging day for the Chapman duo. We arrived out to the island before 6 ready to walk.  The access road to the beach was impassible.  I fell trying to get up the middle of the mountain and had to readjust to the side of the mountain.  Bill set off to the south and I went north.  Bill found a nest south of MM#1 and I found no crawls or nests.  Bill tried to get back to me and was not successful.  I walked back from the long end and found that my backpack which I had left for Bill to pick up (because, of course, the crawl would be on the long end) when he was walking down to me was gone.  Kayakers had removed it from by the entrance and placed it by the nest!

Because Bill had taken the car to get me I did not have a probe (in car) and needed help. I called Leslie and she can out with her equipment and even a poncho for me because if was threatening rain. We probed and did not find any eggs. Bill walked back to us.

There were very clear tracks leading up to the nest. The crawl measured 34".

The tracks seemed to go up behind the body pit but were very wind blown due to the dry sand.

It was not a very large or well-defined body pit and not much thrown sand. It was in the midst of the King tide HTL.

We probed extensively.

We marked it a false crawl and went back to mountain climbing! Took the correct route this time.
