False crawl #13 today. Our turtle walked up to the wall, hit it and went back to the ocean. It was very wind blown and the high tide had obliterated most of the track. There seemed to be somewhat of a body pit but not much thrown around sand. We probed extensively but nothing was found.
Nest #5 had two big crab holes. Others were windswept but fine.
Our grandchildren (Will, 14, Jake, 12, and Ryan, 11) who have been coming out to Waties since they were 2, 3 and 5 years old were with us. They had never seen track before...they usually are here in August. They really wanted a nest!
Waties Island, the northernmost barrier island in South Carolina is roughly 4.0 km in length. It is a private undeveloped barrier island at the border of North/South Carolina. All sea turtle monitoring by this group is authorized by the SCDNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program under Permit MTP500. We strive to help protect the sea turtle, and we are at it again this season! The site will be updated often during the nesting season - May 1st through October.
