Wednesday, September 15th Inventory of Nest #8

Today, was very quiet, no excitement like yesterday.  We did not have students.  For them to come out to the island a CCU Sea Turtle Board member has to come out with them - and all had classes or work.  So sorry, we  missed seeing our students today.

The Wednesday Team consisted of The Chapman's, Leslie, Sharon and Phyllis - who is on the Wednesday Team, all others were covering for other members of the team and we had a guest  The inventory went really fast, and had a great outcome.  Phyllis and Sharon were the diggers, Sharon's friend Debbie was the helper, and Flossie and Leslie did the sorting.  This nest was laid on July 16th, 12 inches deep, crawl width was 34 - 35 inches wide.  This nest was never bothered by Ghost Crabs, and never over washed.  The outcome of the inventory was 80 eggs over 50%, 7 unhatched, 0 dead, and 0 Live Hatchlings.  This nest has a 90.9% Hatch Success, and 90.9% Emergence Success.  A total of 88 eggs.  Great results.  The eggshells were taken by Phyllis and Sharon to the backside of the dune and buried.

Since we had two trucks, and no students, Leslie did not want to waste a trip, so it was decided to gather up the buckets, DNR signs, and white poles.  Yes, a sign that we are close to the end of sea turtle season.  Along with this, we removed the DNR sign marking for PN #2, it was on day 76. It has been changed to a False Crawl in seaturtle.org.

PN #4 which is 59 days old, still has some Ghost  Crab activity, and very close to being over washed.  Nest 9 is 53 days old, so hopefully, we will see an emergence soon.  Nest 10 is 39 days old and has a way to go.

This was only 16 inches deep!

Everyone busy

Are we done?

We did visit the short end of the island.  The bulldozer blazed a trail through the woods down there - to be used as a fire break in the future and allows the first responders' easier access.  There is a lean-to camping setup back there - interesting.

Old lean-to camping site?

New path into the woods

The bulldozer did a loop, fire break and access for the first responders
