Waties Island Nest Count

Wednesday, August 5, 2020

Waties always a surprise!

We decided to walk the south end first due to dark clouds in distance.  Not long into walk changed our minds and went back to truck.  Decided to finish the island  by truck.  All of a sudden Leslie says is that what I think it is!  Sure enough nice neat crawl. She went right up, made her nest and came right back down.  Only 30" wide.

Crawled right  up to dune that is left.

With shelf cloud getting closer we knew we had to work fast.  I was lucky to find nest on fourth probe. Leslie then quickly found eggs.  We only took secondary poles out with us (thin white ones) so  we put one pole in back of reed and two in front.
Notice crab hole to the  right.

Notice the sheared off dune!

Since  our markers are not yet up, the picture below shows an easy to spot white plank sticking out of dune.  We think  this nest is between what was  M4 & M5.

It all came together quickly as did the cloud below that was heading our way.

Glad to report we were safe and dry through the whole thing.
