It's always exciting when we see a nest getting ready to emerge. Today we found Nest 9R, located between m.6 and m.7 with a classic depression. This nest is 58 days old today. A depression indicates that the hatchlings are coming out of their shells and moving around underground, thus changing the sand chamber above them. After they have rested a bit and straightened out their flippers and shells, they will climb out of that chamber. And head to the ocean. This nest has 108 eggs in it. It was moved up closer to the dunes on June 22,

Waties Island, the northernmost barrier island in South Carolina is roughly 4.0 km in length. It is a private undeveloped barrier island at the border of North/South Carolina. All sea turtle monitoring by this group is authorized by the SCDNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program under Permit MTP500. We strive to help protect the sea turtle, and we are at it again this season! The site will be updated often during the nesting season - May 1st through October.
